The Artist: Michelangelo
Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni comonly known as Michelangelo was a well known Italian artist. Michelangelo was a talented sculptor, painter, poet and engineer. Michelangelo is revered as one of the most talented artist of his time along with his contemporary Leonardo di Vinci. Some of his most famous work includes his sculpture of David and his frescos on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Rome. Michelangelo's art is considered "High" Renaissance European Art.

In the early 16th century Michelangelo was comissioned by Pope Julius II to repaint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. Michelangelo initially refused as he considered himself a sculptor and not a painter, maintaining that he was most skilled in the former. By 1512 Michelangelo had painted over 300 life-sized figures on the ceiling of the chapel. The images painted on the ceiling are Michelangelo's representations of notable moments in the christian bible.
